Broken Water * Sick Weapons * Hollywood * Muhammidali

Broken Water - (Portland, OR) BROKEN WATER is a three piece band from Olympia, WA formed in August 2008 and heavily influenced by the local music scene there from the 1990's to present. Two members of Olympia’s SISTERS (Parts Unknown Records) and one member of Congratulations make up this band. In August of 2009 they self released a two track 7 inch with DIY letterpress packaging and a 6 song demo CD. They are currently recording another 8 song release. Broken Water plans to tour the US in March and April of 2010. Here are what other musicians are saying about them:

Jared Warren of the Melvins, Big Business, and KARP: "I really like your band, nice fuckin work. Broken Water are a heavy, psychedelic band. Not in a hot desert way or even taking your shirt off in the sun while enjoying drugs way. You are definitely wearing a coat. Your fingers are numb, your feet are wet, and it's been dark for a very long time. Then you come home and warm up next to a wood stove. Broken Water is the soundtrack for watching large icicles fall from high places. That's a heavy trip."

Wynne Greenwood of Tracy and the Plastics: "I love your record. I've been listening to it everyday since I got it. I feel like I'm laying on the living room carpet in early high school freaking out to new records and not knowing limits. But the teenager becomes an adult. And this record reminds me of an amazing thing that happens in that transformation. Limits have become more liberating than no-limits. This record feels like it's not trying to get me to escape my life, but coming to sit with me in my house. It's asking for more complicated emotions."

Vern Rumsey of Unwound: "I love it. It's great. Besides having one of the best names in rock, Broken Water has a wall of sound that would make Phil Spector jealous... a sound that rivals My Bloody Valentine, and reluctantly Sonic Youth, but in a way that shuns Blonde Redhead... a sound that is unique: all it's own, a sound that has no rival. Not having seen them live yet, makes me want to... and I can't wait: a hurricane of sound that is most likely to be a hurricane of energy."

Chris Sutton of Hornet Leg and Gossip: " Broken Water is an aptly named band. When a mother's water is broken, her mind rushes with anxiety, confusion, and purpose while the body prepares itself to spring forth the radiant life within. Upon an introductory listen, one is perhaps reminded of golden era Sonic Youth (Coming True comes to mind), or maybe a My Bloody Valentine devoid of its oft celebrated cynicism, or even the laconic playfulness of The Breeders (Feminism). Kanako's confident and self assured singing dances heavily over the magma and I wish to feel what she feels (Love? Hate? Pain? Blood? All of the above?). Track 4 I am transported to a planet of destroyed guitars and reverb drenched pulses. The swirling soundscapes create a druggy haze, akin to somthing I might invibe for an alternative type of self therapy. There is no harsh realities created by mental toiling that LSD puts you through or the raw & trembling exhaustion that one might experience on mushrooms after laughing a little to much. "

<empty> Sick Weapons - (Baltimore, MD) "Best New Band: Until this fall, Baltimore punk cornerstone Reptilian Records was on hiatus for nearly a year, during which time it closed its physical store on Howard Street, slowly shifted into a mail-order outlet, giving its label a rest. That is, until owner Chris X caught wind of this new band Sick Weapons--deciding after seeing a show to put the label back in action with the five-piece's debut record. Sick Weapons is that rare band that doesn't easily fit into any genre of music--it is, broadly, punk, but moored in shredding and garage clatter enough to keep rock 'n' rollers happy. For that matter, Sick Weapons has everyone from warehouse party kids to Ottobar old-schoolers to DIY punkers pretty happy and, like musical kin Double Dagger, excels at straddling Baltimore's varied music-making and -listening communities. Basically:, in another year, Sick Weapons will own this town." - Baltimore City Paper

Hollywood (Baltimore, MD) - "As we all know, Baltimore can get low down and gritty. Seems to me like the perfect Mid-Atlantic city to harbor a gutter rock band like Hollywood. “Hits! An Alltime Low” is Hollywood’s first full length CD/LP release available via Big Neck Records. If you’re super into post-blah, blog core, or happen to be super PC stay far away from this shit cuz you just can’t handle it. P.S. No one really likes hanging with you.

One glance at that hijacked Shirelles layout and you know you might be in for a ridiculous time. What you probably don’t know is that it’s also a time you’re gonna wanna brag to your friends about. Like that time you went to that weird house party and got to see some beer soaked skin flying around while everyone else stayed home with wine and cheese and had a boring conversation.

“Ione Skye” opens up this bad boy with a banging jam dedicated to that girl from that movie “The River’s Edge”. It pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the record with an array of buzzing guitars and a perfect bonehead chorus. BTW, no bass on this record but you won’t miss it. Make no mistake though, this shit is not the White Stripes.

From here on in the riffs only snowball in swagger. “Sixteen” through “Girl?” (also available on 7″) are pretty much classics. If you’re not at least half head banging by now, go check your record collection and make sure you like rock n roll. If you can stand up to the relentless pounding the drums are dishing out, you might be handy in a fight. You might also want to check Hollywood out live, though this would normally mean a trip up 95 to Charm City. They don’t really mess with us DC ussies.

Just to prove a point that life isn’t all dandelions and bumblebees, the 54 second “B&W” comes in to ruin your day with a wall of punk beats and indecipherable vox. I’m not really sure I wanna know exactly what is being said here. “Momma” and “Human BBQ” return to what Hollywood does best. Overblown garage riffs with the balls of an ox in heat. At certain points Nirvana bro’s might get psyched for the general vibe. We get thrown a cover of “Cause I’m A Man” by the Pretty Things, which pretty much sums up the Hollywood mentality and then we try to stay alive for the 4 minute long idiot savant piece “Toucher”. Your tolerance/love of noise is brought into question at the end of this guy. Last time I saw Hollywood they bust that one out and I think half the crowd was confused, and the other half knew that they were officially Hollywood fans.

There are two more jamz on this shit but I don’t care because by the end of the record I’m already looking for a shower. I feel low down and filthy and I’ll probably drunk dial someone soon with this record playing in the background." - Yes or No DC
