Gilbert Alfaro (of Spain Colored Orange)- (Houston, TX ) They’re a psychedelic/indie band from Houston, Texas and they recently released their Bill Racine-produced (Flaming Lips, Mates of State, Mogwai, Mercury Rev, Phantom Planet, Sparkehorse and etc, etc) album Sneaky Like A Villain on Shout It Out Loud Music. They’re Spain Colored Orange and you might have heard them on Olay or Ford commercials, or you saw them play with our friends in Trail of Dead or a number of other notable acts — or you’re about to learn about them from this interview with singer Gilbert Alfaro. So read it. Or don’t. Or do. Or do.

To begin, Spain Colored Orange has a really eclectic sound. I wouldn’t know how to describe it, so can you do it for me?
That’s a question I get asked quite a bit… I almost never know how to answer it. *Taking a pause to ask my girl for advice on this question.* OK, I’m back… the answer is “carnival saloony.”

Bill Racine, who has worked with the Flaming Lips and Mates of State, produced your record Sneaky Like A Villain. What did he bring to the table?
Bill really opened our eyes to a lot of good ideas. He’s the master of trying anything and everything. Some of the ideas we pulled off in the studio were great! His ideas for Sneaky like A Villain worked… it gave it character. I think when he flew back to Brooklyn he slept for days. We may have showed him too much of a good time at night. Sorry Bill.

You were named Best Indie Rock Band by the Houston Press in 2006 and 2008. What the heck happened in 2007?
We took a break that year and slept in a lot.

You’ve had some songs featured in commercials. Can you talk about those for me?

Well, Shout It Out Loud Music got us a few licensing gigs… The first one was for Olay which they used “Who Am I.” Then there was another for Ford Motor Company and they used “Hide” and “Maybe It’s True.” And recently did one for Tween… they used “Birds And The Bees.”

You’ve shared the stage with some pretty impressive acts. Can you give me a brief list and maybe an interesting story or two?
A lot of those stories are a blur… There would probably be one with Trail Of Dead and Mates Of State. Just because we’ve played with both a few times and had a good time afterwards.

What’s a Spain Colored Orange show like?

A drunken mess. No, no… a drunken good time with dancin’ and colorful lights! Everyone leaves with a smile on their face and still time for last call.

What’s next for Spain Colored Orange?
We are recording our newer album in Austin next month. It will be called “Lord, Romance Never Stood A Chance.” We’re pretty excited to go to work on it.

What else do we need to know about Spain Colored Orange that we haven’t discussed in this interview?
Perhaps our hopes and dreams? Nah. I think you know enough for now… Thanks for the interview!

And finally, what’s the meaning of life?
Anything goes. Life’s too short. It’s cliche… but it’s true.
