Saturday, August 20, 2011 – Pura Pharm * The Stage Frights * Los Area 51

PuraPharm (Houston, TX)

Purapharm is the vision of, and was formed by, long-time singer/songwriter/guitarist, Tessa. She is now joined by bassist, and husband, Paul Adams, Niki Sims on saxophone and clarinet, and Anthony “Buffalo” Rodriguez on the beat machine, vocals, keyboards and guitar. Paul and Tessa are also the founding members of their former band, 61-Cygni ( ), and they released two cd’s, “Binaural Beatings” and “Playing In The Halocline”. They played numerous shows in 61-Cygni, making a solid and original impression on the Houston music scene.

With Purapharm, they have maintained the wall of spaciousness provided by Tessa’s guitars & vocals and Paul’s thunderin’ bass groove foundations, but also added the soothing melodies of Niki’s horns and Buffalo’s hypnotic rhythms & melodies. The sound is toned down an iota from the 61-Cygni sound and is slightly more meditative, yet still maintaining the influences of bands like Curve, The Church, My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins & Sonic Youth to name a few, that were ever-so present in 61-Cygni.

Purapharm is currently in the studio and in the pre-production stages of work on their debut release.

The Stage Frights (Houston, TX) – The Stage Frights are Houston’s hottest Horror rock and roll band. The brain child of Larry Rainwater (Ex-VoTo, Kommunity FK, Ardour of Angels and the Nobody’s) They mash up the Dead Boys, New York Dolls, the Misfits, Ramones and Garage Rock into a fast swirl of dark rock frenzy! With their songs like My Dead Girlfriend’s back we learn just how bad the consequences of standing up your best girl at the prom can be when she returns as a zombie! But it’s not all Si-Fi mayhem here as songs like Never Stop and I’m Feeling Alright the rock is hard and heavy. Never short on Humor and never short on Rock. The Stage Frights will have you rocking with a smile on your face even if they are signing about someone being stabbed sixteen times in the back!

Friday, August 19, 2011 – Irene * Devil Killing Moth * A Spanish Disposition

Irene – (Houston, TX)

Irene Gonzales was our grandmother. She inspired and encouraged. She had passion for life, and loved us unconditionally. All three of us had been playing and performing at an early age. Oscar and I had been in bands together, and always felt a musical bond. We started Jamming with our younger brother Hector, and even though our influences and styles weren’t the same, we liked what was coming out. IRENE became our name without debate. In part as a tribute to the person our grandmother was. In part because we were deep into what we where doing. We had bands in the past, but this was it. All or nothing, into the unknown creating and pushing ourselves and our music. We will not relent. Dan Oviedo (guitar/vocals) .

Devil Killing Moth– (Houston, TX)

Devil Killing Moth came to me in a dream.
I never understood what it meant.
I could see it, and I could hear it, but I couldn’t quite explain it.
It was on the tip of my tongue… lyrics are demeaning of man and melancholy isn’t so much the mood as the force of hope and anger.
To prevent being absorbed into the green furry wasteland, we had to move.
Its funny how dreams are…

Thursday, August 11, 2011 – Nia De-Bose Presents The Late Night Liquid Courage Comedy Showcase

Nia De-Bose Presents The Late Night Liquid Courage Comedy Showcase

There’s a new alternative to the Comedy Club. No drink minimums, and [relatively few] dick jokes. We get it; Airline food sucks, dogs are different from cats, and women love shoes. Moving forward, Houston Comedian Nia De-Bose is providing Houstonians with a new format for comedy. The Late Nite Liquid Courage Comedy Showcase will feature the city’s best and brightest upcoming and established stand-up Comics. Think of the Tonight Show, if it only featured Comedians. With the Average Black Band playing some mean 70’s funk, and libations abound it’s sure to tickle your funny bone and lure you into the Soul Train line! Local stand-up legend Ali Siddiq headlines.

Determination to succeed best describes Ali’s rising star into comedy, building an impressive resume in a short period of time. Ali has hosted and performed at several college campuses, participated in numerous celebrity events and briefly hosted his own radio show, “Tuesdays with Ali”, on KBXX 97.9 The Box. Ali began his comedy career in the penitentiary. Refusing to feel life had defeated him, he emerged from the dreary walls of incarceration as a man with a zealous mission; to become a professional humorist. “To me therapy is comedy, comedy is laughter, and laughter is happiness.” Ali’s hard work and dedication resulted in his swift and steady rise in the comedy arena. In his new life, he quickly took advantage of the opportunities given to him by the owner of the Jus’ Joking Comedy Café, in Houston, Texas. There he emerged as a weekly featured stand-up. Honing his comedic storytelling skills, building his name and quickly catching the interest of some of the most talented comedians in the industry. His off brand style of humor tickles the funny bone of audiences at every show.

Saturday, August 6, 2011 – The Distracted * Batemen Red * Yello Echo * Cirrus Minor * DJ Mister Castillo

The Distracted (Houston, TX) – The Distracted is an up-and-coming Houston-based hard-rock band whose influences splinter into many genres of rock, blues, pop, post-grunge, punk, and metal. While these influences are seemingly broad, the band molds them together into one sound. A sound that is self-evident in a manner that transcends traditional boundaries. And above all else, The Distracted is a rock band with one purpose—to Rock!

A new evolution of sound and rock n’ roll…these guys will rip your face off with the buzz of their feedback, then serenade you with a semi-dark growling ballad.
-Joe T. NITES blog

Bateman Red (Houston, TX) – In the spring of 2007, the destruction of a Southeast Texas Rock Band brought on the formation of a new powerhouse in Texas Rock: BATEMAN RED! With a chunky, thundering, rhythmic pulse and catchy, Zeppelin-esqe hooks, Bateman Red showcases the ultimate musical triumvirate: charisma, talent, and balls out ROCK; bassist Ryan C., drummer Justin, Jay Cantu on Harps and Brass, and guitarist/vocalist Nave crank out what can only be described as music to have a good time to. Whether it’s a blistering hour-long set or a full 3 hour show of originals spiced with rocks most Bad-A$$ covers, Bateman Red always delivers and never disappoints. After winning Texas Supernova’s Band Wars 2009 at Fitzgerald’s, Bateman Red is definitely in high demand on the North Side of Houston. Taking cues from such heroes as Led Zeppelin, Guns and Roses, and somehow, fittingly, the Texas country music scene, Bateman Red invents a new sound of it’s own. This is a Must-See live show!!! Helping revitalize a genre, Bateman Red concentrates on the one thing that actually matters- Making good rock records that you cannot help but groove to.

Yello Echo (Houston, TX) – It began with Mani Nezami and Crystal Toliver coming together(at the suggestion of Mani’s girlfriend Val) during the summer of 2010 to exchange musical ideas and see what they could come up with. After realizing they had some great ideas and that they should pursue it further they sought a drummer to complete the puzzle and ended up with Chris Bassett. From then on the trio known as YELLO ECHO has been working together writing songs and performing. Some of the local venues who have hosted YELLO ECHO are Mangos,Bohemeos,Avant Garden,Deans,Fitzgeralds and Jet Lounge(now ECHO). As of this writing YELLO ECHO is placing the finishing touches on their debut album and are continuing to bring their live show to the local Houston scene.

Stay tuned!

Cirrus Minor (Houston, TX) – Today, a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration – that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There’s no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we’re the imagination of ourselves. Here’s Tom with the weather.”

Welcome to the End
The first Ep, which proclaims the story of an average Crownsman in a battle between personal reason, science, and the overall triumph, of what he and other bigots see as the correct way of life–and they have the genes to back it up!
This Machine you keep feeding, will follow you home. Listen for change in the way of your own. What proof may I offer to you? A story of hope, or the chance to be true! This may change your world, or sit blindly through.
