Friday 21 July 2018 – Yaupon (EP Release), Second Lovers, Jealous Creatures

Yaupon (Houston, TX)

Yaupon (pronounced “yo-pawn”) is a word for a shrub or tree, but it is also the name of a rock band in Houston, TX. In 2017, Yaupon grew out of the ashes of former local bands Race To The Moon, Hello Elle, and Golden Sombrero – groups that had once shared a practice space together complete with two mini-fridges. Yaupon is a product of collaboration between songwriters, instrumentalists, and baseball debaters. The Yaupon vibe is inspired by favorite 70s tunes the band members grew up listening to in their dads’ trucks/sport utility vehicles. Yaupon has been described as a band that “adds a bit of raucous modern Southern rock to their textured indie rock sound.” Yaupon’s first EP, Whispered History, will be released at Rudyard’s on July 21st.

Second Lovers (Houston, TX)

Since 2010, the band is a 2-person outfit including Thomas Truver (lead guitar) and Nic Morales (vocals / guitars).

Jealous Creatures (Houston, TX)

Jealous Creatures was formed in 2010 and consists of Sarah Hirsch and Josh Barry. Known for their Western Haze sound, the band bridges the gap between 80s indie rock and 90s bluesy, murky punk. Nominated for the Houston Press Music Awards Best Traditional Rock in 2013 and Best Modern Rock in 2014, the band made a splash with its previous releases: BAZOOKA, which was released in 2013; Little Heaven Big Sky, 2011; and their self-titled EP, released in 2011 as well. Their newest LP, The Night Goes on for Days, released in July 2015, finds the band pushing new directions, all the while remaining true to the Jealous Creatures sound.

Friday 20 July 2018 – Turbojugend Presents: Hell’s Engine, The Velostacks, Feels Like Murder

Hell’s Engine (Houston, TX)

Under dogs of the scene with a very big, nasty bite…. These four Houston punk rock n’ rollas originally formed in 2004, and after both a hiatus and some restructuring, reformed in 2015. With only a self-titled demo recording to claim, they’ve recently hit the studio and released a new EP. If that’s not enough, their single “Chopper Slut” will be released on a 7-inch vinyl split with New Jersey’s Electric Frankenstein on Self Destructo records this fall, 2016. With influences like Turbonegro, Motorhead and D.R.I…… Hell’s Engine will surely not be running low on fuel anytime soon.

The Velostacks (Houston, TX)

Motorcycles. Leather. Rock n’ Roll. Vive La Velostacks!!! Although originally starting in 2013, it was 2014 that saw The Velostacks transition from a nearly dead idea to a one of Houston’s hardest working rock n’ roll bands. Following a chance meeting at a motorcycle rally, Curtis W. DeGidio (Chrome Kickers, Chelsea Hotel, The Guillotines) and Donnie Stokes (UGH, Satanic Overlords of Rock n’ Roll) quickly went to work. Houston music scene legend, J.R. Delgado (Sugarshack, Humungos, Screech of Death) was brought aboard on bass guitar, with Arthur Hayes (The Next) jumping in on drums and Richard Crishock (Mister Pink, Texas Mod Crushers, Johnny Rioux and the Seven One Three) rounding out on lead guitar. After playing a fury of shows around Houston and Austin, Dave Ng (Latchkey Kids) was brought aboard to take over drums. Playing many gigs and constantly writing, The Velostacks recorded the “I Live and Die for Rock n’ Roll”, b/w “FU and Your Cocaine & “Brain Dead Cagers” single. As the undisputed kings of motorcycle leather rock n’ roll, The Velostacks, with help of their dedicated fan base ,The Sleazestack Militia, declared their intent of raising Hell and taking names. Late 2015 saw more personnel changes as Curtis moved from rhythm guitar to guitar and lead vocals. Bass duties were picked up by Houston’s rock n’ roll legend Christian “The GFN” Best (The Down and Dirties, Hell City Kings, Whiskey River Revival) and drums passed to Nate Bandor (The Grizzly Band). With this lineup, their first LP “Black Magic & Motor Oil” was released early 2017.
